The most common New Years Resolutions revolve around being healthier, improving financial situation and/or strengthening family, work and social relationships. Surveys indicate that the majority of people who make new years resolutions are confident that they are going to be able to keep them. However further research indicates that less than 20% of these people actually achieve their goal. The following are some tips you can use that greatly enhance your ability to accomplish whatever you set out to do.

• State your goal in behavioral terms (Instead of saying “I want to be healthier”, define what behaviors you plan to utilize to achieve this goal).

• Make sure that your goal is measurable

• Set goals that are realistic

• Focus on behaviors that you personally control.

• Make sure that the goal you set is for you, not somebody else.

• Tell others about your goals and utilize family and friends as support.

• Write your goals on a piece of paper where you can see it often.

• Monitor your progress. Reward yourself for any move in a positive direction.

Be open to trying new behaviors if some you are already using are not working.

• Focus on “progress not perfection”

Setting goals and achieving them, especially when they entail making lifestyle changes, is often frustrating. Seeking the guidance and coaching of a professional can often increase your chances of success by helping you identify and define goals more effectively and providing support and encouragement in helping you to stay on task. To discuss in more detail how you can make effective changes in your professional and personal life call counselors at PTC ( 954-741-1099).

Have a safe and happy New Year!!

Summer Health & Wellness

Summertime usually conjures up images like relaxing at the beach, fun in the park, picnics, barbeques, and family vacations. Though, traditionally a time of joy and celebration, the holidays can also be a time of increased stress. All of us have limited resources especially in terms of time, money and our ability to manage emotional stress. Preparing for the holidays often means stretching these resources even when many feel that their resources are already being stretched to capacity. However, with a little planning and effort all of us can experience some holiday enjoyment without causing financial and/or emotional bankruptcy.

Here are some tips that you can use to help make holiday time less stressful.

Set Healthy Expectations:
* Do not expect perfection of yourself or others.
* Simplify family traditions that may be too expensive, time consuming or non conducive to your already hectic lifestyle.
* Avoid feeling compelled to attend every holiday event.
* Prioritize what is truly important in making the holidays special for you and your family.

Be fiscally responsible:
* Before you go shopping, decide how much you can afford to spend on gifts or other holiday expenses.
*     Stick to your budget.
* Use cash as often as possible. Using credit cards often leads to spending more than you can afford and usually makes what you are buying more expensive due to interest and finance charges.
* Explore ways to express holiday cheer that do not cost lots of money.
* Look for ways to share expenses especially in regards to gift giving and event planning.
* Remember that you truly can not buy happiness, love or acceptance.

Alleviate family strain:
*    Set Differences aside.
* Avoid using holiday gatherings as a time to resolve old and recent grievances.
* Accept family members for who they are, not who you wish them to be.
* Understand that not everyone experiences the holidays the same way. Be supportive to those who appear to be struggling.
* Remember that the only happiness you can truly control is your own.

The most important thing to remember is to be kind to yourself. Pace yourself, eat well get enough rest and let the true spirit of the holidays, Peace & Love guide you.

If you or someone is needing support during the holidays call PTC (954) 741-1099.

Positive Thinking

OPTIMISM
“Man is disturbed not by things, but the views he takes of them”. This piece of ancient Greek wisdom is important to keep in mind during today’s trying times. Personal and global events may have significant impact our emotional state, however, the intensity and duration of this impact is greatly determined by the way we think about a particular event. Recent research has concluded that individuals who adopt an “optimistic” way of viewing the world and related events are happier and more successful than their “pessimistic” counterparts. Pessimists see primarily the negative or worst aspects of things and expect only bad or unpleasant things to happen. Pessimists tend to be problem focused. This often creates self fulfilling prophecies which produces the outcome they fear or worse. The optimist on the other hand is the person who expects the best possible outcome or looks for the most hopeful aspects of a situation. Optimists tend to be far better problem solvers because they tend to look for solutions and opportunities for success.Optimism should not be confused w/ being a “Polly Anna” or living in a state of denial during difficult times. Rather, it is the skill of altering thoughts that block happiness and sabotage an individual’s ability to cope with and move beyond difficult times with grace and dignity. Even in the most difficult of times there are individuals who achieve success. Having a personal outlook that promotes growth and well being enhances yo ur chances of personal and professional fulfillment in any time.

Written by: Jeffrey Jabick, LMHC (PTC)
Resource: Book- Learned Optimism by Martin Seligman, Ph.D.

Create Work/Life Balance

Establishing an effective work/life balance is one of the most important keys to having a healthy and productive life. An inability to establish and maintain a healthy balance can lead to significant emotional and physical distress. One of the biggest barriers to creating this balance is that most people don’t know how to make the transition from work to home. However, with a little effort, planning and practice, this transition can become smooth and seamless. The following are some tips you can try to facilitate this transition:

*Improve time management and assertiveness skills

*Enhance relationships w/ co-workers and managers to improve teamwork. This will allow you to be more effective and efficient while at work.

*If possible, devote the final minutes of your day to less pressured tasks.

*Empty your mind of unfinished business by “putting pen to paper”. Then place what you have written in one of two places; a folder labeled “For Tomorrow” or the trash can.

*Embrace the commute home. Use the alone time to de-stress.

*When at home focus your attention on family and issues you enjoy.

*Pre-arrange w/ your family some “me time”.

Healthy work/life balance is not easy and requires practice. We at PTC have counselors that can provide you with further coaching and counseling to help manage the demands of work and home more effectively.

WANT HEALTH?

CHECK OUT:

www.mindbodyjuiceplus.com

Prevent Breast Cancer

Thermography - also known as thermal imaging or digital infrared imaging, is the earliest breast screening tool available today and is over 97% accurate in the early detection of breast cancer. Thermography uses no compression, no radiation, and is designed to detect abnormal vascular growth in the breast tissue 8-10 years earlier than any other imaging method. An abnormal vascular growth is very foreign to the body, creating the heat and and inflammation that is detected with thermal imaging. Thermography is so sensitive, that it can detect the slightest change in your breast tissue in as little as 256 cancer cells. However, for a mammogram to detect breast cancer, over 4 BILLION cancer cells are needed. Mammography is detection once you have breast cancer; thermography is prevention, alerting you early enough to begin the process of reversing the new abnormal vascularity, with a nutritional program and hormone balancing, if needed. Breast cancer is highly dependent on imbalance hormones so be sure to get your hormones checked and balanced. Everyone should be made aware of this valuable screening tool so we can prevent this epidemic disease.

If you have questions or you are interested in early detection. We are constantly reminded of things like the poor housing market, diminishing retirement portfolios, rising unemployment and failing companies. Inflation is causing many to feel as if they are in a financial vice. To make matters worse, we are told that things are likely to get worse before they improve. No wonder that more and more of us are experiencing increased emotional unrest.
Feeling powerless over what is going on in the world intensifies our distress. But there are things we can do to minimize the impact of difficult financial times on our emotional and psychological well being.
First, make an effort to practice basic stress management techniques on a daily basis. These include but are not limited to: eating well, getting adequate sleep, exercising on a regular basis and finding an outlet to talk about your thoughts and feelings.
Secondly, despite your powerlessness over global economics, look for ways to gain control over your personal finances. It is recommended that one of the most important things you can do during uncertain economic times is to establish an accessible “emergency cash reserve”. This seems daunting to many, because so many of us live paycheck to paycheck, but you would be surprised with how a little effort, creativity and ingenuity can lead to some significant monthly and yearly savings.

Some recommended tips include:
1. Keep a log of daily, weekly and monthly expenditures and look for opportunities to cut out “non-essentials”.

2. Purchase generic brands at supermarket.

3. Utilize newspaper coupons

4. Contact utility companies, especially those regarding services like cable and phone services and inquire about cheaper plans.

5.When shopping, go with a list of exactly what you need and stick to that list. Avoid impulse buying.

6. Unplugging all electrical items when not in use can save hundreds of dollars/year.

7. Use cash whenever possible. Paying w/ credit cards often increases the cost of your purchases and encourages us to buy more than we need or can afford.

8. Pay bills on time and when possible on-line.

9. Be aware that many of us spend more when we are under increased stress. Look for healthier ways to deal w/ your feelings.

10. Do a house cleaning and look for unused items you can sell on line or at a tag sale.

11. When possible take advantage of any opportunities to increase household income streams.

Free Wellness Lecture (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

Stress Reduction, Nutrition & Wellness

On Thursday, March 12, 2009
You are invited to learn how to improve your health and wellness with education on stress reduction skills and whole food nutrition.

Speakers:
Jeffrey Jabick, Licensed Psychotherapist
Lisa Friedman, Licensed Psychotherapist
Theresa McIntosh, Acupuncture Physician

THE LENOX will be hosting this wellness lecture. At younger and younger ages, children and teens feel compelled to behave in ways they believe to be more “adult like”. Unfortunately, experimentation with drugs and alcohol is one of the more common symptoms of “pre-mature” adult behavior.

As with adults, but even more so with the still developing minds and bodies of children and teens, drug and alcohol use can cause significant harm. It important for parents, teachers, and counselors to have some understanding of potential warning signs and what to do should they suspect their child is engaging in drug/alcohol related activity.

Signs of Drug Use in Children and Teens:
Change of friends.
Be especially wary if your child begins to interact with older friends.
Known or suspected use of drugs by friends of your child.
Extreme changes in mood, moodiness, or increased irritability
Carelessness about personal appearance and grooming
Isolating from family members
Increased defensiveness
Decreased interest in favorite activities
Altered sleep or eating patterns
Diminished performance at school and truancy
Increased disciplinary problems
Troubles with the law (DUI’s, shoplifting, disorderly conduct)
Red or glossy eyes; constant running nose
Family history of alcohol and/or drug problems
Missing money, alcohol, or prescription drugs
Finding suspected drug paraphernalia ( i.e. pipes, butane lighters, rolling papers)

Awareness and maintaining an active and caring interest in your child’s well being is the most important aspect of minimizing child/teen drug problems. If you suspect that your child is using drugs or alcohol, it is most important that you address the issue as soon as possible.

Here are some ways to address this issue w/ a child:

Approach your child from a place of concern rather than anger
Inquire and ask questions but avoid the temptation to directly accuse
Be specific as to what you see, hear and smell that leads you to believe there may be a problem
Expect your child to be defensive; stay as cool and calm as you can
Set limits and use appropriate consequences for unhealthy or unacceptable behaviors
Continue to get education on substance abuse and parenting tips

If troubling behaviors and warning signs persist or worsen, seek professional help.

· State your goal in behavioral terms (Instead of saying “I want to be healthier”, define what behaviors you plan to utilize to achieve this goal).
· Make sure that your goal is measurable
· Set goals that are realistic
· Focus on behaviors that you personally control.
· Make sure that the goal you set is for you, not somebody else.
· Tell others about your goals and utilize family and friends as support.
· Write your goals on a piece of paper where you can see it often.
· Monitor your progress. Reward yourself for any move in a positive direction.

Be open to trying new behaviors if some you are already using are not working.
· Focus on “progress not perfection”

Setting goals and achieving them, especially when they entail making lifestyle changes, is often frustrating. Seeking the guidance and coaching of a professional can often increase your chances of success by helping you identify and define goals more effectively and providing support and encouragement in helping you to stay on task. For many however, the holidays bring about what is commonly referred to as the “Holiday Blues”. Holiday Blues can range from mild sadness and just feeling stressed to symptoms of severe anxiety and/or depression. For many, holiday time can magnify difficulties that have been present all year long but become intensified due to the pressures of trying to promote the holiday spirit. Family/relationship issues, grief and loss, financial strain, and time constraints are common sources of increased emotional distress. Unrealistic expectations and difficulties setting healthy boundaries increase the potential of feeling overwhelmed during the holiday season.

Here are some tips to help you manage the most common triggers of holiday distress:

Unrealistic Expectations:
* Don’t expect perfection of yourself or others. Driving yourself to exhaustion will not create a happy holiday for you or your loved ones.
* Simplify family traditions that may be too much work or that are not conducive to an already hectic lifestyle.
* Prioritize invitations and do not feel compelled to attend every holiday event.

Family Issues:
* Set differences aside
* Accept family members and friends as they are, not who you wish them to be.
* Avoid using holiday gatherings as a time to resolve old and recent grievances.
* Be supportive of others who may be feeling negatively. Remember they may be experiencing the same holiday stress that you are.

Financial Strain:
* Before you go shopping, decide how much you can afford to spend on gifts or other holiday expenses.
* Stick to your budget.
* Remember that you can not truly buy happiness, love or acceptance.
* Explore ways to express holiday cheer that do not cost lots of money.
* Find ways to share expenses with others especially in regards to gift giving and event planning.

The most important thing to remember during this time of year is to be true and good to yourself. This means setting boundaries with others and making time to care for yourself. Focus on making this holiday season as joyful as possible. If you don’t feel merry for whatever reason, share your feelings with loved ones and let them know what you need from them.

Clinical Supervision for MSW's and Mental Health Counselors

PTC gets several emails a month re: psychotherapists and interns that want us to post tools and skills. Setting and communicating these expectations in a healthy manner goes a long way in helping children achieve their maximum potential.

There are two primary types of expectations that can be established for kids. The first type is behavioral. Behavioral expectations demonstrate character traits that parents would like to see in their children. These may include things like manners, ambition, perseverance, respect, and the ability to take responsibility.

The second type of expectations is achievements. Achievements are based on your child accomplishing specific objectives such as developing friendships, earning certain grades, or making a team.

It is important that that the expectations you set are realistic. Expectations that are set too high or do not match your child’s personality, strengths, age, or interests can lead to all kinds of negative stress for you and your child.

Here are some helpful tips you can utilize establish healthy expectations:
· Talk to your child often so you can understand his/her strengths, weaknesses, and interests.
· Make sure that you communicate your expectations clearly and specifically.
· Ensure that your child has the resources, education, and support needed to reach set standards.
· Make sure your child knows how they, not you, benefit from meeting certain expectations and goals.
· Emphasize unmet expectations as opportunities for learning and growth as opposed to being examples of personal failure.
· Remember that your actions speak louder than words.
· Avoid using “do as I say, not as I do” as a primary parenting philosophy.

Self Esteem Tool

Self Esteem Box

Clients and the therapists I supervise always ask me for tips, tools and skills to build self esteem.

The building blocks of self esteem are developed while receiving praise and accolades for successes, as well as pride for self, all throughout child development. If anything got in the way of that developmental task…a person’s self esteem is possibly less full as one would like.

One of the tools that I use is a “Success Box”. This tool is for kids, teens, and adults.

As each individual creates and fills up their “success box” they have a tangible way to access their success…and this will assist someone in building upon each success... thus building a strong sense of self esteem.

Here’s how you create or help someone create a “Success box”:

Use a shoebox or a box that is the same size and decorate the box according to your personality. (My box may have suns, starts, greens, blues and purples, pictures of animals, and perhaps a collage of beach scenes). Everyone’s box is different.

As you begin the creation process, this is your “Success Box”. Start to fill the box up with letters/cards you have received praising you from others, note cards with your daily, weekly and yearly successes (any successes), awards, and your own note cards including positive thoughts about yourself.

Parents helping their kids with a “Success Box”: use fun note cards and write your child successes daily and/or as each success occurs and give it to your child to place in their box. Include praise from teachers, other parents, siblings and adults in your child’s life.

Now the box exists for when you having a low moment: Just open the box and review the contents when you need them. We build our self esteem all throughout our life…so you can continue adding to your box and reviewing the contents whenever necessary.

Have Fun!

Lisa

Tips to Improve Self Esteem

Tips for improving self-esteem:

1.Use visualization to achieve your dreams and increase your self- esteem!

2. Increased job satisfaction also promotes greater productivity. The key to experiencing greater job satisfaction is gaining control over how you approach your job.

Every job has challenges. Tips/tools for promoting a more positive work experience include:

1. When faced with a situation at work that you do not like, think about possible solutions as opposed to dwelling on perceived problem.

2. Maintain perspective and check your focus. Nobody likes every person or task. Concentrate on aspects of the job you like and the task(s) you are charged with completing.

3. Remember that everybody is going to have good days and bad days. They tend to equal themselves out.

4. Look for ways to improve your skills to promote continued professional growth. Stagnation breeds discontentment.

5. Look for ways to break up monotony (i.e.: Become crossed trained or volunteer for different tasks).

6. Avoid negative “self-talk”. The more you tell yourself that you do not like your job the more likely you are to validate your beliefs.

7. Another key aspect of experiencing job satisfaction is to clarify what motivates or inspires you. People tend to approach their work from three primary perspectives; job, career, and/or calling.

Job oriented people view their work primarily as a source of income. They work to finance other aspects of their lives or to accumulate wealth.

Career oriented people tend to focus on advancement. They look for ways to climb the corporate ladder or obtain the next highest title.

Some individuals view what they do as their calling. These people truly identify with and to a greater extent, enjoy what they do at work.
We are all motivated at some level by each of these three perspectives. But knowing which holds the most weight for you will help you focus your energies in a more fulfilling and productive direction.
How to Create Change

If you’ve ever made a New Year’s resolution and abandoned it a few weeks later, you know how reluctant human beings are to change. Our habits are something we can count on and they give us a routine, a sense of predictability. Attempting to break a bad habit or acquire a new one –even if it’s for the better – can make us feel very uncomfortable and lead us back to the familiar. Let’s see what we can do to help make positive changes lasting changes.

1. Be realistic. Break your goals into small, manageable steps.

2. Be persistent. Think long range about the time it will take to replace your new lifestyle with the one you’ve had for the past ten years. It’s going to take more than a few weeks and more than one effort or approach.

3. Be specific. Saying “I want to take better care of myself” is too vague to know what you’re going to do or how you’re going to do it. But by saying “I will take 20 minutes each day to walk or do yoga”, you’ll be able to gauge if you’re making progress.

4. Be forgiving. Know that in any change process, setbacks are bound to occur. If you break your diet or have a cigarette; this is not a failure. Progress is picking yourself up, dusting yourself off, and continuing your efforts.

5. Be proud. You don’t have to meet your total goal to celebrate. Incremental accomplishments will lead to your ultimate success – so go ahead and tell a friend, post your progress chart on the wall, or give your self a reward.

Review

Hi there,
If you are new to visiting Professional Toolbox Consultants' blog....or you are a regular guest you may want to review our blog from the beginning.

We have tools and skills for a variety of topics such as: communication, relaxation, motivation to fitness, self esteem, love & money, parenting, and more.

* Set differences aside

* Stick to your budget.

Assertive Communication

“I” vs. “U” Statements

As discussed in an older post, I vs. U statements are the cornerstone to communicating ASSERTIVELY.

Definition: Using the pronoun “I” to take responsibility and to promote cooperation and understanding when making statements to others. It is important to realize that lots of money does not guarantee relationship bliss nor does lack of wealth doom a couple to a lifetime of hostility.

Severe financial battles are more often a symptom of overall relationship problems as opposed to the cause of them. Money becomes the focal point of so many couples’ battles because relationship strife tends to stem from struggles for power and control. Money is the universal symbol of power in modern society.

There are three common, yet unhealthy behavior patterns that demonstrate the role of money as “power”. First is power spending. Power spenders spend money to prove that they can. The power spender often feels as if their partner is trying to control them and they spend in order to prove their autonomy. Revenge Spending is another unhealthy pattern. The revenge spender spends money to “get back at” their partner for a real or imagined betrayal. The third unhealthy tendency is for one member of a couple to assume all responsibility for financial issues within a family. This is often due to a person’s need to feel “all powerful” and to have greater control or dominance over their partner.

Tips for not letting money tear you and your partner apart include:
1. Understand and respect you and your partner’s individual views of money.
2. Comprehend how your fiscal behaviors impact your partner.
3. Find ways to share fiscal responsibilities and decision making.
4. Know your motives for spending and making certain financial decisions.
5. When faced with financial stressors look for ways to support each other and solve problems together.

Jeff Jabick, LMHC , PTC

Women- A Tool For Balancing Your Life

Managing multiple tasks, continually balancing priorities and maintaining healthy relationships is a challenge for even the most capable person. Doing this requires skills, tools, and tricks that most people have not mastered or do not know exist. Here is a self-assessment tool to assist in creating better balance your life.

Write the number 24 (this is 24 hours a day) and start subtracting each part of your day. Start with the areas where you utilize the most hours. See the example:
-----------------------------------24-hour day

SLEEP--------------------------- 7
WORK--------------------------- 8
COMMUTE----------------------3
HYGIENE------------------------1
EATING/MEAL PREP----------2
FAMILY TIME-------------------3
--------------------------------- ____
------------------------------------ 0

0 time left for wellness activities/household chores/friends/other activities

This example validates what many women are currently feeling. After using this assessment tool, this woman identified commute time as one area that can be changed. After changing her work hours (non-rush hour), she increased her available hours. With this additional two hours, she incorporated exercise, light mediation, and household chores into her daily life.

Witness your specific juggling act. Is your health poor? Finding no “me time”? No energy for significant others? Our biological functioning is regulated by an internal clock known as the circadian rhythm. This clock is tells the body when to sleep and when to wake up. Sunlight and darkness regulate this clock. Under normal conditions, darkness triggers the body to steadily go into “sleep mode”. As the body prepares for sleep blood pressure, heart rate, respiration, and temperature drop while digestion and normal cognitive functioning slows.

Common health hazards associated w/ shiftwork include:

Gastrointestinal problems- Shiftworkers tend to be eating at a time when digestion is slowing. Shiftworkers tend to have access to less healthy meals and rely on snacks that are high in fat content. Shiftworkers often rely heavily on coffee which increases risk of ulcers.

Cardiovascular problems – Altered eating patterns, disrupted sleep patterns can lead to cardiovascular disease by increasing stress and blood pressure.

Sleep and stress related disorders – The shiftworker attempts to sleep when the body is naturally programmed to wake up. This decreases sleep quality and quantity. During specific stages of sleep necessary physical and psychological repair takes place. Disrupted sleep patterns prevents healthy restoration to occur possibly leading to increased risk of physical and/or emotional breakdown.

Drug and alcohol abuse- Shiftworkers often become dependent on drugs and/or alcohol in an attempt to either help stay awake or help to get to sleep. Most commonly abused substances include caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol and over the counter sleep medications.

Family and social issues- Shiftworkers usually have less time to spend with family and friends. They are at work or trying to sleep when regular social activities are scheduled. Fatigue may also impact shiftworker’s ability to spend quality leisure time with others. Single parents also have to deal with difficulties finding appropriate child care.

Tips for minimizing the impact of Shiftwork include:
1. Get to sleep as soon as possible upon returning home after work
2. Avoid caffeine at least one hour prior to going to bed
3.Beware of using alcohol or other drugs as a means of falling asleep or enhancing energy
4. Learn relaxation techniques and utilize them as part of a set bedtime routine
5. In the room where you sleep eliminate as much light and noise as possible; keep the room as cool as possible.
6.Make sure you eat a healthy breakfast no matter what time you wake up. This meal should be high in protein.
7.Avoid eating fried food especially late at night.
8.Discuss with family and friends the impact shiftwork is having on both you and them.
9.Let family and friends know how they can be supportive.
10.Try to eat at least one meal together with family.
11. Schedule times that you can spend with family and friends.
12.Engage in some exercise routine at least 3 times per week.

PTC

Enhance Communication (Part 1)

“I” vs. “YOU” Statements

Definition: Using the pronoun “I” to take responsibility and to promote cooperation and understanding when making statements to others. We are down to 6 weeks before the first Women's Power Building Workshop. We cannot wait to begin this innovative set of workshops. These are a compilation of workshops we have created and presented to small & large groups/companies in the past. We have put together these set of workshops to assist women in the South Florida community to receive these tools and skills to master life. Please let us know if there are additional ways to enhance the workshops. Check out our Professional Toolbox website (Women's seminar section) for times, topics, costs, place, and how to enroll. We are branching out to a new service. We have created Women's Power Building Seminars in Plantation, Florida. We are routinely asked to provide individuals & organizations with the tools and skills to decrease stress, learn to deal with emotional clutter in their life, learn assertiveness/communication skills, and tools to care for themselves. So after many years of practice as private practice psychotherapists and consultants in the community, we decided to start our newest endeavor by creating workshops solely for women. These workshops have a variety of topics, times, dates, and prices to assist women in building their toolbox of skills to master their personal and professional lives. To see specific information on the workshops, visit our website at http://www.professionaltoolbox.org/.
